August Birthstones: Peridot, Spinel, and Sardonyx

August Birthstones: Peridot, Spinel, and Sardonyx

While some months have only one birthstone, August has three. The August birthstones are peridot, spinel, and sardonyx. Here’s what you should know about these stunning stones and where to find the perfect gift for those born in August.

What is the August Birthstone?

August has three birthstones: peridot, spinel, and sardonyx. Sardonyx is the month’s original birthstone, found over 4,000 years ago.

Peridot

Peridot is a yellow-green gemstone and a magnesium-rich variety of the mineral olivine. It’s associated with Pele, the fierce Hawaiian Goddess of fire. Just like a fire burns everything in its way, peridot can help clear away negative energies that hold you back.

In history, peridot has often been confused with stones such as topaz and emerald. Some historians insist Cleopatra’s emerald collection was peridot.

Peridot can be found in many sites worldwide, including Vietnam, China, Pakistan, and the United States.

Spinel

The name “spinel” comes from the Latin word “spina,” meaning “thorn.” It comes in a range of colors, including red, pink, purple, orange, and green. Because of its various forms, spinel has often been mistaken for other gems. And yet, some of history’s most famous rubies have actually turned out to be spinel, such as the “Black Prince’s Ruby” from the Imperial State Crown.

The symbolism of spinel varies depending on its color. For example, red spinel is associated with romance and passion and is said to bring harmony. It was also once believed to remedy inflammatory diseases.

Sardonyx

The oldest of the August birthstones, sardonyx, is a combination of sard and onyx minerals, which form the reddish-brown stone. In ancient times, sardonyx was often used in Roman seals and signet rings. Soldiers would wear sardonyx rings for protection.

The sardonyx birthstone is associated with happiness, courage, and clear communication. It is believed to strengthen marriage and relationships while attracting friends and good fortune.
