Off the Chain: Oversized Chain Link Pieces Are Still Going Strong

Off the Chain: Oversized Chain Link Pieces Are Still Going Strong

Fall is coming, and chain link jewelry has definitely taken over this season’s style forecast. The classic gold pattern has accompanied many outfits on the runways in the form of everything from earrings to chokers to rings. But I have to say, its future does seem to be looking a little bit more refined, taking on a modern finesse.

Parting ways from straight-up Versace inspiration, the chain link obsession is heading into more elegant territory, being reimagined with uniquely delicate silhouettes and the addition of diamonds and pearls. So, while an echo of Donatella Versace’s D&G Italian baubles still visibly exists, the future is leaning toward a softer tone. But don’t worry—you can still rely on chain link pieces  to rev up any outfit. There’s a certain edge and novelty it lends when you’re looking to keep your clothes low-key and your accessories in the spotlight.

Let’s take a  look at some of my latest faves.

The Cuban Link Ring

Designed in14k yellow gold, this ring from Serena Williams Jewelry shines with ½ total carats of brilliant pavé diamonds. It makes a statement when mixed and matched with other rings and metals, but can certainly stand out on its own. Its classic character promises the ability to wear it day or night.

The Curb Chain Bracelet

Because the brand has been one of the masters of the chain link for many years, I simply had to include a David Yurman piece. The team’s designers have always managed to inject just the right amount of panache into each and every design, but this one really wins me over. This magnificent rose gold creation is embellished with a total of 9.16 pave cognac diamonds for a unique kind of sheen. I love how it balances femininity and boldness at the same time.

The S-Curve Link Tennis Necklace

A bit demure, this sterling silver tennis necklace comes to life with yellow rhodium, and 2 cts of diamonds beautifully tangled up in S-curve links. It can become a perfect layering piece when paired with other diamonds or chains. It hints at the 80s just a smidge, which is great in my book. It’s the mixed-metal look I love the most.

The Paperclip and Pearl Necklace

This design is absolutely divine. Updated with a modern, highly sought-after paperclip link chain, the State Property necklace features Akoya pearls for a touch of vintage flair. Designed to be a matinée-length necklace, this creation can also be layered with other chains, colorful stones, and charm pendants, depending on the look you’re trying to achieve.

The Watch Link Earrings

Cartier subtly taps into the Victorian era with these Agrafe earrings. Set in 18k yellow gold with 79 brilliant-cut pavé diamonds in each one, the top part of these beauties was made to resemble the clasps seen on Haute Couture Parisian silhouettes from long ago. Finished with watch-style links, the craftsmanship and elan here are unmatched.

Ultimately, stacked and layered jewelry has been a trend for quite some time. The beauty of it is that you can create your own look, and constantly change it up so you don’t get bored. There are no right or wrongs here — just listen to your instincts, and rummage through your jewelry box every so often. You might find some amazing pieces that you forgot you owned (i.e. a locket you’ve had since your teenage years) that are perfect for the Chain Link look.
